Faulty Wiring

Faulty Wiring and Fault Finding

Faulty Wiring is one of the five most common causes of electrical fires, should you feel you potentially have faulty wiring within your home please contact as a matter of urgency.

Common signs of faulty wiring:

Circuit Breakers trip frequently

Modern circuit breakers have replaced the old-fashioned fuse-boxes in most homes, it is not unusual for a circuit breaker to occasionally trip and turn off the affected circuit automatically. If this happens you just simply switch the circuit breaker back on, however if a circuit breaker trips frequently it is a warning sign. It may be that the affected circuit is being overloaded. Alternatively it could be the sign of a wiring fault within that circuit.

Buzzing, charred or discoloured switches and outlets

Light switches and outlets should never be hot to the touch or be buzzing or charred. These are common signs of a potentially dangerous issue such as faulty wiring or a loose connection causing a short.

Flickering or dimming of lights

Frequent flickering or dimming of lights can be a sign of faulty wiring or the circuit being overloaded, it could also be the light bulb itself you may be able to test the light bulb on another circuit to eliminate that as the cause of your problem. If multiple light sources are flickering on the sae circuit this may be an indication of a serious wiring fault.

Burning Smell

Although a new appliance may produce a slight smell the first few times it is used if you detect an odour coming from the appliance or outlet, disconnect anything on that circuit and immediately turn the power off of the circuit at the fuse-board do not use it again until it has been checked by a qualified Electrician. Most Electrical Wiring has plastic insulation which during an electrical fire can cause an acrid smell of plastic burning, should you experience any of the symptoms please contact a registered Electrician immediately.
